The Company originated from Dynamic Map Kiban Kikaku Co., Ltd., established to develop high-precision 3D map data (hereinafter the “HD Map (High Definition Map)”) to realize an automated driving system under the SIP administered by the Cabinet Office. The SIP stands for the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program promoted by the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation established within the Cabinet Office. It functions to promote the development of science, technology, and innovation in Japan by allocating budgets across ministries and fields based on the system in which the Council leads the prioritization, etc. of allocation of the overall government budget. One of the challenges in the SIP is the “expansion of automated driving systems and services,” with a focus on the full-scale practical application of the HD Map.
To this end, in June 2016, Dynamic Map Kiban Kikaku Co., Ltd. was established as an organization to conduct joint research by seven companies, led by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, with ZENRIN CO., LTD., GeoTechnologies, Inc., TOYOTA MAPMASTER INCORPORATED, PASCO CORPORATION, AISAN TECHNOLOGY Co., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc., which specializes in map production, surveying, and high-precision positioning.
Against the backdrop of research outcomes here and the growing demand for automated driving applications, a practical implementation of the HD Map became feasible, leading to investment from INCJ, Ltd. (former Innovation Network Corporation of Japan) and 10 Japanese automakers.
As a result, in June 2017, the Company transitioned to an operating company under the name of Dynamic Map Kiban Co., Ltd., and continues its business to this day.
