Data for Autonomous Driving

What is the Dynamic Map Platform Group’s high-precision 3D map data (HD maps)?

HD maps contain geographic features generated by using mapping technology and data integration technology based on a massive volume of high-precision 3D point cloud data collected by our Group. These maps are used for the increasingly sophisticated autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), simulator environment set-up, infrastructure management, and more. It is expected that in the future, it will also be used in various other fields such as automated driving mobility, VR, AR, and the planning of drone routes.

Digital maps are typically thought of as those used in map apps on smartphones and other devices, as well as for car navigation systems (SD maps). In contrast to the SD maps that are primarily used by people, our Group defines HD maps as higher-precision maps used mainly by machine/systems such as automated driving.

The Advantages of HD Maps

Unparalleled coverage

01Unparalleled coverage

Maps developed in more than 26 countries, including 33,000 km in Japan, 1.2 million km in North America, 255,000 km in Europe, and 20,000 km in South Korea. We have also begun map development in the Middle East, and we are expanding on and updating our data in Japan and other countries.

An extensive track record of use by both Japanese and international automakers

02An extensive track record of use by both Japanese and international automakers

We have an extensive track record, with our services embedded in 35 different vehicle models* produced by automakers in Japan and around the world, and we continue to update and maintain the data in accordance with changes in the roads.

We have made possible the centimeter-level accuracy required for increasingly sophisticated autonomous driving systems and advanced driving support systems.

High-Precision 3D Map Data (HD Map) Usage Examples

Even in vehicles equipped with advanced systems for automated driving and driver assistance, there are factors, situations and scenarios that cannot be compensated for by sensors and cameras.
By utilizing high-precision 3D map data (HD maps), these systems contribute to safety and comfort by providing reference information for situations that cannot easily be detected by sensors and for the road ahead.

  • Self-Positioning Applications

    Self-Positioning Applications

In addition to confirming which lane the vehicle is traveling in, road signs and other geographical objects detected by sensors can be checked against HD maps for more accurate self-positioning.
This also helps ensuring sensor accuracy by making it possible to correct sensor accumulative errors.

  • Sensor Support Applications

    Sensor Support Applications

Even in bad weather or other conditions that make it difficult for sensors to scan effectively, the system can refer to HD maps to estimate the location of traffic signals and other geographical objects it needs. In addition, since positions can be estimated in advance, you can also expect a reduced system load when sensing.

  • Predictive Information Applications

    Predictive Information Applications

Referring to HD maps makes it possible to obtain information about points ahead of a vehicle’s travel that cannot be detected by sensors. By obtaining this information in advance, it can be expected that the vehicle’s control will remain smooth and comfortable without disruptions to its behavior, such as when turning left or right or when slowing down before corners.

Other Usage Examples

Simulated reproduction of road environments
as close to reality as possible

Simply import an HD map into the simulator to construct incredibly complex road shapes. This makes it possible to greatly reduce the amount of work required for traffic modeling compared to conventional methods, and also enables the extremely realistic reproduction of actual roads.
