Dynamic Map Platform Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo Ward, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as “Company”), has been commissioned to undertake the “Research and development for the updating of high definition 3D maps using vehicle probe data” (hereinafter referred to as the “R&D Project”) under “SIP Phase 2: Autonomous Driving (System and service expansion)” by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (hereinafter referred to as “NEDO”), the organization managing the “Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) Phase 2: Autonomous Driving (System and service expansion”, conducted by Japan’s Cabinet Office. As autonomous driving systems and advanced driver assistance systems become widespread, HD map data must also be updated in a timely manner based on the changes in road conditions that occur daily. This R&D Project will demonstrate technology to extract changes in roads from vehicle probe data (travel history data, camera imagery, etc.), as well as the feasibility of integrating it with road traffic data including existing information on traffic restrictions to enhance coverage of changes in roads as much as possible, shortening update cycles or reducing map updating costs.
With the participation of companies promoting the advanced development of technologies related to autonomous driving systems and advanced driver assistance systems both inside and outside of Japan, namely NTT DATA Corporation, NTT DOCOMO, INC., Continental Automotive Japan K.K., SoftBank Corp. and Mobileye Japan Ltd, this R&D Project plans to define the necessary vehicle probe data requirements for HD map updates and carry out proofs of concepts regarding data updates utilizing vehicle probe data owned by automotive companies and dashcam data, on Japanese highways.

Our Company will first apply the technology and insights gained from this R&D Project to the updating of HD map data that will be provided to automotive companies from 2020. Moving forward, the Company will conduct further research and development based on the achievements of this R&D Project to establish efficient map updating methods applicable to various regions or road types and promote continuous improvement in the freshness of its HD map data, as collecting information on road changes is anticipated to be more challenging for US roads (highways and surface roads) and Japanese surface roads, where the Company plans to expand its business to.
