As the name implies, Harima Science Garden City is a town with a science focus. It brings together cutting-edge science and technology and professionals at the SPring-8 large synchrotron radiation facility, the SACLA X-ray free-electron laser facility, the University of Hyogo School of Science, and other facilities. Autonomous driving tests were conducted on public roads to raise the feasibility of mobility services using autonomous driving technology in the city and to make local transportation more convenient.

Results of introduction

Working with Aisan Technology Co., Ltd., we produced custom-made High-Precision 3D Map data (HD maps) for a road-going microbus made by Hino Motors, Ltd. The bus, equipped with an autonomous driving system and Autoware* autonomous driving software, traveled round-trip for about 3 km from the central parking area at Koto Plaza Green Square to the North Administrative Building at the RIKEN Harima Branch.

We are continuing to further the feasibility of autonomous driving as a solution for local issues, such as transport for event attendees and tourists, mitigating traffic congestion, help for residents of food deserts, and addressing driver shortages in mass transit.
